At least 11 people have been killed following a violent communal clash in the Udege Development Area of Nasarawa Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, with authorities launching an intensive manhunt for those responsible.
The Nasarawa State Police Command said the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday and was allegedly carried out by suspected hoodlums in retaliation for the killing of two individuals.
During the violence, about 50 houses were reportedly razed in Akyawa community, while two others were destroyed in neighbouring Udege Kasa, leaving numerous residents displaced.
The state Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the affected areas on Friday to assess the damage and console victims. He described the incident as tragic, expressing sympathy for the bereaved families and condemning the destruction.
"We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident that led to the loss of innocent lives and destruction of property," Mohammed said. "The Command remains committed to ensuring that the perpetrators are identified, arrested, and prosecuted."
He confirmed that tactical and investigative units had been deployed immediately to track down those involved and ordered increased security presence in the communities, in collaboration with the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to restore calm.
At a stakeholders’ meeting, Mohammed urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and provide information to aid ongoing investigations. Authorities added that normalcy has since been restored and proactive measures are being implemented to prevent future violence.
The clash follows a similar incident last week in Aso Pada Riverside Community, Karu Local Government Area, where troops of 177 Guards Battalion restored order after retaliatory violence erupted over a dispute involving a vigilante and Fulani youths. That incident had resulted in deaths, injuries, and property destruction, highlighting ongoing tensions in the state.
Police and military sources continue to investigate the latest Udege clashes, emphasizing that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
