Residents Protest Fresh Killings In Ondo, Question Security Spending

Residents of Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado communities in Akure North Local Government Area on Saturday staged a protest over a fresh wave of violent attacks that has left at least two people dead and several others injured.

The aggrieved residents, who turned out in large numbers, barricaded the busy Shoprite intersection near the Governor’s Office in Akure, bringing vehicular movement to a halt as they expressed frustration over what they described as persistent insecurity in their communities.

Tension in the area had escalated on Thursday when suspected bandits invaded Igushin during a failed kidnap attempt, killing a poultry farm owner and her daughter. Less than 24 hours later, gunmen reportedly struck again in Ilado, abducting a youth who was attacked while attempting to escape.

Speaking during the protest, a youth leader identified as Kunle condemned what he described as unchecked criminal activities across the Akure axis, including areas close to the state capital.

He questioned the utilisation of the state’s security vote, arguing that despite the allocation of funds, there has been little visible improvement in safety.

“We are protesting the incessant killings and kidnappings. We are tired of burying our people every week while those responsible for our safety appear helpless,” he said.

Kunle also criticised the lack of visible security presence, noting that armed attackers continue to operate freely without effective response from authorities.

The protesters warned that demonstrations would persist until decisive action is taken to restore security and protect lives and property.

Saturday’s protest reflects a growing pattern of public outcry across Ondo State in recent months, driven by recurring incidents of kidnappings and killings in several communities.
