A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Aisha Yesufu, has alleged that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were bribed with sums of up to $50,000 and offered land allocations to facilitate the removal of the party’s leadership.
The allegation follows INEC’s recent decision to derecognise David Mark as the ADC National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as the party’s National Secretary, a development that has generated widespread reactions in political circles.
Speaking on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, Yesufu also claimed there were reports that the INEC Chairman was allegedly threatened into taking the action.
She questioned why anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), have yet to probe the allegations.
“There are reports that INEC officials were allegedly bribed with monies up to $50,000, and lands were given. Where is the EFCC and ICPC in all of this?” she asked.
Yesufu also raised concerns about the state of the judiciary, warning that lack of independence and accountability in key institutions could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
As of the time of filing this report, INEC and the anti-graft agencies mentioned have not issued official responses to the allegations.
