JUST-IN: APC Tells INEC To Deregister ADC

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Prime Time on Friday, Basiru argued that the presence of what he described as “unviable” political parties clutters ballot papers and undermines the electoral process.

“We’re calling on INEC to deregister the ADC. We don’t want the ballot papers to be clustered with unviable political parties,” he said.

Basiru maintained that the APC is acting within the provisions of Nigerian law, noting that the constitution empowers INEC to deregister parties that fail to meet certain electoral thresholds.

“The Nigerian constitution is very clear… when a political party fails to meet certain thresholds of electoral sensibility, such a party should be deregistered,” he added.

He further stated that the ruling party is not concerned about claims of a looming one-party state, emphasizing that Nigeria currently has about 19 registered political parties, even though some lack viability.

According to him, the call for ADC’s deregistration is based on legal provisions and ongoing court cases, urging INEC to exercise its authority where necessary.

Basiru also dismissed the opposition, describing some political movements as a “coalition of confusion,” and alleging that they generate more noise than meaningful political action.

The statement adds to growing political tensions between the APC and opposition parties, particularly the ADC, as preparations for the 2027 elections begin to intensify.
