Governor Caleb Mutfwang has revealed that gunmen behind the recent deadly attack in Jos disguised themselves as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to gain access to residents before unleashing violence.

The attack, which occurred in Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area on Sunday, left at least 28 people dead and several others injured, sparking nationwide outrage.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, the governor explained that the assailants cleverly mimicked the operational style of NDLEA officials, deceiving residents into believing it was a routine raid.

“Obviously, the attackers studied the psychology of the people… they came hooded and were shooting in the manner NDLEA officers used to shoot, so people took it for granted,” Mutfwang said.

According to him, the community initially did not resist because such raids by anti-drug operatives were common in nearby areas. However, by the time residents realized the attackers were impostors, significant damage had already been done and the gunmen had fled.

Despite the scale of the attack, Mutfwang disclosed that no arrests have been made so far, though security agencies are working with actionable intelligence to track down those responsible.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Plateau State on Thursday to commiserate with affected families. During the visit, he met with victims, traditional rulers, and government officials, and directed security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended.

The governor described the assault as premeditated and professionally executed, noting that the attackers demonstrated advanced weapon-handling skills. He added that both residents and security forces were caught off guard, especially as the state had enjoyed about 10 months of relative peace prior to the incident.

While acknowledging the anger among residents, Mutfwang urged calm and warned against reprisals, stressing that the attackers’ objective was to destabilize the state and disrupt ongoing peace efforts.

The incident marks another troubling chapter in Plateau State’s security challenges, with renewed calls for urgent and decisive action to protect lives and restore stability.
