The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State has been thrown into deeper crisis following the emergence of a new State Executive led by Tony Alike.
Alike was announced as chairman alongside 23 other executive members, despite ongoing disputes and conflicting claims over the party’s leadership structure in the state.
The announcement was made by the National Collation Chairman, Sem Andrew Uchendu, at the party’s secretariat.
The development comes barely 24 hours after a member of the party’s National Executive Committee, Rowland Owie, declared that Nosa Ehima had been elected as the state chairman.
Further complicating the situation, the incumbent chairman, Kennedy Odion, whose tenure is due to expire on May 19, said he was unaware of any congress being conducted in the state.
Speaking before announcing the results, Uchendu disclosed that he spent three days in Edo State supervising congresses held at the unit, ward, local government, and state levels.
He explained that party leaders in the state, led by former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, agreed on a consensus arrangement that produced the new leadership.
According to him, the process was aimed at establishing a well-structured leadership for the party in the state.
Addressing journalists after his emergence, Alike said his immediate priority would be to unite aggrieved members and reposition the party for future elections.
He also revealed that consultations had already begun with key stakeholders, including a visit to Odigie-Oyegun.
Alike stressed that the party would soon unveil its plans to mobilise Nigerians and provide a credible alternative ahead of the next general elections.
The latest development highlights deepening internal divisions within the ADC in Edo State, raising concerns over the party’s unity and preparedness for upcoming electoral contests.
