Residents of Bunkasau village in Zarummai ward, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State, have been thrown into mourning following a deadly attack by armed bandits that claimed several lives and left many others unaccounted for.

The assault, which occurred late Friday night, saw a large group of heavily armed men storm the community on motorcycles, unleashing terror on unsuspecting residents. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers, estimated to be about 80 in number, fired indiscriminately as they moved through the village, causing panic and forcing many to flee for safety.

A local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, revealed that the bandits not only killed several residents but also abducted a number of villagers, predominantly women. In addition, the attackers reportedly carted away livestock, further compounding the losses suffered by the already vulnerable community.

The source added that the attack took place deep into the night, leaving residents with little time to react or defend themselves. As of the time of filing this report, villagers were still combing nearby bushes and surrounding areas in search of missing persons.

“We are appealing to both the Federal Government and the Zamfara State Government to urgently intervene by deploying more security personnel to our area,” the source said. “We need protection and a lasting solution to these repeated attacks.”

Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, stated that while the attack did occur, the exact number of casualties could not yet be determined. He assured that security operatives have since been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.

Abubakar also urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information on the movements and activities of suspected bandits, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital for effective response and improved security.

The latest attack adds to the growing concerns over insecurity in Zamfara State, where rural communities continue to bear the brunt of recurring banditry and violent raids.
