Agboola Ajayi |
The defectors were formally welcomed into the PDP by the party's candidate in the upcoming November 16 governorship election, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, during a ceremony in Ondo town on Monday. Ajayi urged all PDP leaders and members, particularly in Ondo West Local Government, to collaborate with the new members to secure victory in the forthcoming poll.
"While I’m welcoming the members, I want to implore our leaders, particularly in Ondo West Local Government, to embrace these people and work with them for our success on November 16. We should all work together and ensure PDP carries the day on November 16," Ajayi stated.
Ajayi also took the opportunity to express his readiness to serve the people of Ondo State if elected. "I know where the shoe pinches our people. I have been a former chairman, former House of Representatives member, and a former deputy governor in the state. I have the experience and all the needed requirements to pilot the affairs of Ondo State to a pleasant destination. So, I want us to be united and work to achieve victory in the November 16 election," he said.
One of the leaders of the defectors, Mr. Adeniran Oyebade, a former APC senatorial aspirant, expressed his commitment to working for the PDP and supporting Ajayi's bid to become the next governor of Ondo State. Oyebade explained that he and the other defectors left the APC due to the party's alleged lack of plans for the state's development.
"I spent over nine years in the APC, including paying a huge sum of N20 million for a party form, among other contributions to the party at the local government, state, and federal levels, but no dime or single reward was given in return," Oyebade lamented. "As we are now, I and other 12,000 of my supporters, we have begun the rescue journey with the PDP and Agboola Ajayi to salvage Ondo State from the hands of oppressors and corrupt leaders," he declared.
The mass defection is expected to have a significant impact on the political landscape in Ondo State as the governorship election approaches.
