Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to enact laws aimed at improving the living and working conditions of Nigerian workers, as the country marked the International Workers’ Day.

In a statement personally signed and released on Friday through his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio congratulated workers across the nation, commending their resilience, dedication, and unwavering patriotism despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.

The Senate President, who also chairs the National Assembly, said the contributions of Nigerian workers remain the backbone of the nation’s economy and democratic stability. According to him, the sacrifices made daily by workers across all sectors continue to sustain national growth and development.

“On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora to celebrate and commend the resilience, industry, and patriotism of our workers whose efforts keep the engine of our nation running,” he said.

Akpabio paid tribute to professionals across various fields, highlighting the critical roles played by teachers, farmers, healthcare workers, artisans, traders, civil servants, and security personnel. He described them as the “true heroes of democracy” whose daily labour drives economic productivity and national progress.

Acknowledging the economic pressures faced by workers, including rising living costs and increasing workplace demands, the Senate President assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly remains focused on policies that will enhance workers’ welfare.

He emphasized that the Senate is committed to legislating for improved conditions such as a living wage, safer work environments, sustainable pension systems, and policies that will stimulate job creation and protect workers’ rights and dignity.

Akpabio noted that recent government initiatives, including the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage Act and various welfare programmes, reflect ongoing efforts to address workers’ concerns and improve their standard of living.

He further called on employers in both the public and private sectors to prioritize the welfare of their workforce, stressing that a motivated and well-supported labour force is essential for national productivity and economic prosperity.

“As we commemorate this year’s May Day, I urge employers to place greater emphasis on the well-being of their employees. A satisfied workforce is fundamental to sustainable growth and national development,” he added.

The Senate President also lauded labour unions for their role in maintaining industrial harmony and fostering constructive engagement with the government. He pledged continued collaboration with organized labour to ensure that workers’ interests remain a priority in national policymaking.

Reiterating the commitment of the Senate, Akpabio assured Nigerian workers that legislative efforts would not relent until every worker can enjoy improved living standards, dignity, and renewed hope for the future.

He concluded by extending his best wishes to workers across the country, encouraging them to remain steadfast and optimistic as the government works towards building a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
