The Diocese of the Niger, Anglican Communion, has suspended a priest, Reverend Ifunanya Maduka of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Nteje, Anambra State, over allegations of staging fake miracles and delivering false prophecies.
In a suspension letter dated April 27, 2026, and signed by the Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo, the cleric was barred from priestly duties for six months without pay. The Diocese cited conduct deemed “grossly unbecoming” of an ordained minister.
According to the Church, Rev. Maduka allegedly orchestrated and manipulated prophetic acts and miracles by using individuals known to him, presenting the events as genuine spiritual manifestations. The Diocese further stated that the priest admitted to the misconduct when confronted with evidence.
The Church condemned the actions, describing them as a serious breach of ecclesiastical standards, moral integrity, and the ethical responsibilities expected of clergy. It added that the conduct amounted to deception of worshippers and could be interpreted as obtaining money under false pretence.
“Such actions are wholly inconsistent with the calling, character, and sacred responsibilities of an ordained minister of the Gospel,” the statement read, noting that the incident has brought disrepute to the Church and undermined public trust.
The suspension takes immediate effect, with Rev. Maduka directed to hand over all church property and records to the People’s Warden and vacate the parish premises within four days.
The Diocese also disclosed that a disciplinary panel will be set up to further investigate the matter and recommend additional actions in line with Church regulations.
