Two United States military helicopters were struck by Iranian fire while carrying out a search-and-rescue mission for the crew of a downed F-15 fighter jet, officials confirmed.
US sources said the helicopters came under attack while flying at low altitude over Iranian territory amid ongoing hostilities between Washington and Tehran. Despite the assault, both aircraft managed to exit Iranian airspace safely.
A source familiar with the operation told The Hill, "Two U.S. military helicopters were hit by Iranian fire while conducting a search-and-rescue mission."
The helicopters were targeted during efforts to recover personnel from the downed jet, highlighting the risks faced by American forces in the region. Another official confirmed that although the helicopters were hit, they were able to escape without being downed.
Some personnel aboard the aircraft may have sustained injuries, but all crew members are believed to be safe. One crew member from the F-15 has already been rescued, while efforts continue to locate the remaining missing personnel.
The incident underscores escalating tensions between the US and Iran, with military operations in the region increasingly carrying high risks for personnel.
