Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled a coordinated attack by suspected terrorists in Sokoto State, thwarting what could have escalated into a major assault on a rural community.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 17 in Garin Hillo Village, located in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the swift response of troops played a critical role in neutralising the threat.
Makama revealed that soldiers attached to the 8 Division, operating from a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Gatawa, received credible intelligence about the movement of armed attackers in the area. Acting promptly, the troops mobilised and advanced toward the village, where they encountered the assailants.
A fierce gun battle ensued as the troops engaged the attackers, who were reportedly about 30 in number and heavily armed. The terrorists, who had stormed the village on foot while firing sporadically to instil fear, were eventually overpowered by superior military force and forced to retreat.
Despite the successful defence, the attack left six civilians injured. The victims, caught in the crossfire and ensuing chaos, were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Sabon Birni, where they are currently receiving medical attention. No fatalities have been reported as of the time of filing this report.
Residents of the affected community were said to have fled their homes during the attack, with many expressing fear over the increasing frequency of such incursions in the region. However, the prompt intervention of the military has been widely commended for preventing further casualties and destruction.
Makama further disclosed that troops have since intensified security operations in the area. This includes sustained patrols, surveillance, and a reinforced military presence aimed at deterring any renewed attempts by террорист elements to infiltrate the community.
The development underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where rural communities continue to grapple with attacks by armed groups. Authorities have reassured residents of their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information.
Military sources maintain that operations in the region will continue until all threats are neutralised and normalcy is fully restored.
