Former Jigawa Senator, Ex-Defence Minister’s Allies Dump APC

A former senator representing Jigawa South-West, Sabo Nakudu, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), further intensifying the wave of defections rocking the party in the state.

Nakudu, who previously contested the APC governorship primary in 2023, lost the ticket to the incumbent governor, Umar Namadi.

In a resignation letter dated April 3 and addressed to the APC chairman of Sundimina Ward in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area, the former lawmaker said his decision followed careful reflection on the current political climate.

“This decision was taken after careful consideration,” Nakudu stated, while also appreciating the party for the opportunity to serve.

“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity given to me by the party to serve and contribute to its growth and development over the years,” he added.

Nakudu’s exit comes amid a growing list of APC chieftains in Jigawa State who have recently dumped the ruling party. Notable among them are Zakari Hausa, a former aide on health matters; Jamilu Zaki; Auwalu Sansani; and Shehu Sule.

Many of those who resigned are believed to be loyalists of former Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru, although their next political destination has not been officially confirmed. Political observers, however, speculate that several may be aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently gained traction amid early realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to the development, Mati Ali, spokesperson to Badaru, clarified that his principal remains a committed member of the APC.

He emphasized that the decisions of those leaving the party were personal and should not be interpreted as reflecting Badaru’s stance regarding his membership of the ruling party.

The latest defections underscore shifting political dynamics in Jigawa State as parties begin to reposition ahead of future elections.
