Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, which previously allowed eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.

The telecom operator disclosed that the decision is part of ongoing operational adjustments aimed at aligning with evolving regulatory requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company’s Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, said the move was necessary to ensure full compliance with current industry expectations.

According to him, the suspension is in line with broader efforts to meet regulatory and operational standards governing telecom services across the country.

Despite the suspension, Airtel Nigeria reassured customers that its regular services remain unaffected.

Subscribers will continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to standard airtime and data purchases through existing channels, with no expected impact on network performance or overall service delivery nationwide.

Also commenting on the development, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the decision as both necessary and responsible.

“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.

The company assured subscribers that further updates regarding the suspended service would be communicated in due course.

The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based services within Nigeria’s telecom sector.
