The Ambassadors for Self-Determination, USA has issued a press release reacting to recent comments credited to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, in which he stated that President Bola Tinubu has “defied all agitations from Biafra.”
In the statement dated January 30, 2026, the group described the remark as a revealing moment in Nigeria’s handling of the Biafra self-determination movement. According to the organisation, the comment underscores what it sees as a clear federal stance on the issue and highlights the role played by Igbo political actors within the current power structure.
The group stated that responsibility for the present situation should not be placed solely on external forces, but examined within the context of decisions made by elected officials from the South-East. It referenced governance approaches such as market closures and security enforcement in the region, noting that these policies have shaped public perception of leadership alignment on Biafra-related matters.
The statement also referenced public comments previously attributed to Abdullahi Ganduje, which the group said reflected a broader political reality surrounding the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the Ambassadors for Self-Determination, USA urged Biafrans to remain politically conscious and strategic, emphasizing civic awareness and unity over what it described as symbolic participation without tangible outcomes. The group also encouraged critical evaluation of political leadership and accountability at all levels.
The release concluded by reaffirming the group’s belief that the Biafra cause is sustained by popular conviction rather than institutional endorsement, calling for cohesion, long-term planning, and commitment to self-determination ideals.
The statement was signed by Evans Nwankwo, President of the Ambassadors for Self-Determination, USA.
