The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a Biafra-wide solidarity strike scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, calling for a complete shutdown of economic and public activities across the South-East and other Biafran territories.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the action is a voluntary and peaceful show of solidarity with traders at Onitsha Main Market, following the Anambra State Government’s decision to shut the market for one week. IPOB said the strike is intended to express opposition to the closure and to underscore support for traders affected by the decision.

According to the statement, the planned action is not an enforcement directive but a collective response by supporters across Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi and other areas identified by the group as part of Biafraland. IPOB described the proposed shutdown as a unified demonstration tied to its long-standing call for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and broader demands for self-determination.

The group referenced remarks and policies attributed to Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, including warnings of extended market closures and potential regulatory actions, saying these steps have heightened tensions among traders and residents.

IPOB reiterated that Monday sit-at-home observances began as peaceful protests and maintained that compliance has historically been voluntary. It urged residents to remain indoors, avoid commercial activities, and conduct themselves lawfully during the planned strike, stressing its commitment to non-violence.

The statement also appealed to banks, schools, transport operators, civil servants, and private businesses to participate peacefully, while cautioning against provocations and actions that could undermine the group’s stated objectives.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government has not issued a fresh response to the IPOB announcement. The development adds to ongoing debates over market regulation, civil protests, and security concerns in the South-East.
