The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a fresh and uncompromising clarification on its internal leadership structure, warning against what it described as growing indiscipline, impersonation, and misinformation within and outside the movement.
In a detailed internal memorandum signed by its Spokesperson and Media/Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB reaffirmed that the movement remains under the exclusive leadership of its founder and leader, Nnamdi Kanu, whose directives, it said, are “final and unquestionable.”
According to the statement, IPOB’s chain of command was deliberately created by Kanu from the inception of the movement to ensure discipline and unity during periods of crisis. The group stressed that no statement, policy position, or directive concerning IPOB is valid unless it passes through the Directorate of Media and Publicity, which it described as one of the oldest and most critical organs of the organisation.
The memo further disclosed that Kanu personally appointed members of the Directorate of State (DOS), including appointments made while he was in detention, reinforcing the claim that his authority remains intact regardless of circumstance. IPOB dismissed claims that any committee, caucus, or online platform can override or reinterpret its leader’s instructions.
On the widely discussed sit-at-home scheduled for Monday, February 2, IPOB clarified that the action is strictly a one-day protest, initiated in direct response to what it termed the intimidation and harassment of traders in Anambra State by the administration of Governor Charles Soludo.
The group also debunked reports of an alleged secret engagement between some individuals claiming to represent IPOB’s DOS and officials of the Anambra State Government over developments at Onitsha Main Market, insisting that such individuals neither represent IPOB nor speak for its leader.
IPOB reiterated that its leader has consistently aligned himself with traders, artisans, and other marginalized groups, adding that no private negotiation or inducement can alter that stance.
The statement ended with a stern warning to dissenting voices, urging those unwilling to abide by Kanu’s leadership to disengage from the movement rather than create confusion under the IPOB name.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” Emma Powerful stated, “the press statement on Monday’s sit-at-home was issued by me alone, in line with the directive of our leader.”
The declaration is expected to further intensify political and security attention on the South-East as authorities, traders, and residents brace for the planned protest action.
