The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday as Justice James Omotosho prepared to deliver a long-awaited judgment in his terrorism trial.
Naija News reports that Nigerians are closely following the proceedings, which are being broadcast live on multiple television channels, including NTA, Channels TV, AIT, and TVC. Cameramen from the stations were present in the courtroom to ensure live coverage.
Upon entering, Kanu addressed the court directly, insisting that no judgment could be valid because he had filed fresh motions and processes.
“There is no judgment as I have filed my processes,” he said, noting that he had submitted a notice of motion to the Court of Appeal, which, according to him, should pause the day’s proceedings. He also referenced notices already before the appellate court.
Justice Omotosho commenced the sitting by taking appearances of counsel and emphasising that decorum must be maintained throughout the proceedings. He noted that despite heightened tensions surrounding the case, the court would adhere strictly to due process.
Years-Long Legal Battle Nears Crucial Decision
Kanu’s trial is one of Nigeria’s most high-profile and controversial legal cases. He was first arrested in 2015 on charges of treasonable felony and terrorism-related offences. In 2017, he fled the country while on bail following a military raid on his residence in the South-East during Operation Python Dance.
He was rearrested in Kenya in June 2021 and returned to Nigeria in what his lawyers describe as an “extraordinary rendition.” Since then, the charges against him have expanded to 15 counts.
Kanu’s legal team maintains that the trial is invalid, citing alleged violations of international extradition laws, constitutional rights, and jurisdictional procedures. They argue that procedural and substantive errors undermine the legitimacy of the case, asserting that the court lacks the authority to deliver judgment.
Despite these objections, hearings have continued, with Thursday’s session expected to determine whether Kanu will be released or continue to face the charges.
Security around the Federal High Court remains tight as the nation awaits the landmark decision.
