Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has strongly condemned the attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Gunmen reportedly stormed the church during a live programme, killing at least three people, injuring several others, and abducting an unspecified number of worshippers.

In a statement reacting to the development, Adeyanju described the persistent killings across the country as “beyond depressing,” warning that Nigeria is gradually slipping into a state of lawlessness due to what he termed the government’s failure to act decisively.

“The daily killings of Nigerians is beyond depressing,” he said. “Most recently, the gunmen attack at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Kwara State, killing at least two people, injuring many and abducting others. An attack on a place of worship is an indication of the terrifying reality that no one is safe in this country.”

Adeyanju criticised security agencies for what he said was negligence, noting that the attack occurred close to a police station — a situation he argued reflects poorly on the government’s capacity to protect citizens.

He added: “The fact that this particular attack occurred very close to a police station shows government inaction and unwillingness to protect its citizens. President Tinubu must take decisive actions on insecurity or resign.”

The Eruku incident adds to a long list of violent attacks on communities, religious institutions, and schools across Nigeria, despite repeated assurances from authorities that tackling insecurity remains a top national priority.
