The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has been plunged into mourning following the death of Comrade Augustine Egbon, the National Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch.

Egbon passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2025, a development that has sparked widespread grief across the petroleum haulage industry and the broader labour community.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NUPENG’s General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, described Egbon’s passing as a “devastating loss” to the union and to Nigeria’s critical petroleum distribution network.

Olawale said Egbon was a dedicated labour leader whose contributions significantly strengthened the PTD Branch and the union as a whole.

“With a profound sense of loss and deep sorrow, we mourn the passing of our esteemed Comrade and National Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch, Comrade Augustine Egbon (JP),” he said.
“Comrade Egbon was a dedicated leader, a steadfast Comrade, and a formidable pillar within NUPENG. His unwavering commitment to the welfare of our members and his visionary leadership of the PTD Branch has left an indelible mark on our Union’s history.”

The union extended condolences to Egbon’s family, colleagues, and the entire PTD membership, praying that “the Almighty God grants his immediate family, the entire PTD Branch, and NUPENG at large the divine strength and fortitude to bear this great loss.”

NUPENG added that plans for Egbon’s burial would be communicated after consultations with his family.
