Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday departed Abuja for Kebbi State on the instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga.
Gunmen had attacked the school days earlier, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, and abducting dozens of students — an incident that has drawn nationwide condemnation.
According to a statement issued by Shettima’s media aide, Stanley Nwkocha, the Vice President is scheduled to meet Governor Nasiru Idris, traditional leaders, security chiefs, and families of the abducted students. The visit, the statement noted, is intended to reassure Kebbi residents that the Federal Government is committed to ensuring the “quick and safe release” of the kidnapped girls.
Shettima will also convey President Tinubu’s condolences to the affected families and reaffirm the administration’s commitment to strengthening security in schools nationwide.
The Vice President is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes:
-
APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda
-
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro
-
Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim
-
Director-General of NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar
The team is expected to engage directly with affected communities, receive briefings from security operatives, and assess the progress of ongoing rescue efforts.
President Tinubu had earlier condemned the attack, expressing sympathy to the families of both the slain vice principal and the abducted students. He also postponed his scheduled trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, where he was to attend the 20th G20 Summit and the 7th AU–EU Summit.
