Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has adjourned the sentencing of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, until 4pm today.

Naija News reports that the judge earlier found Kanu guilty on all seven terrorism-related counts brought against him by the Federal Government.

Following the conviction, the government—through its lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN)—asked the court to impose the death penalty, arguing that the offences carry the maximum punishment under Nigeria’s terrorism laws.

Awomolo told the court that Kanu’s actions, as established during trial, formed “a dangerous and destabilising pattern,” insisting they were too severe to attract leniency. He maintained that the IPOB leader had committed “many illegalities,” citing evidence presented through recordings, broadcasts, and witness statements.

The prosecution argued that Kanu’s directives and broadcasts incited violence and attacks against security personnel, evidence which Justice Omotosho relied upon in delivering the guilty verdict.

Sentencing is expected to be delivered when the court reconvenes at 4pm.
