The newly elected factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), says the party will keep all alliance and coalition options open as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Turaki disclosed this in an interview with Daily Trust, responding to questions on whether the PDP is considering a united opposition front to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Turaki said the party’s overriding priority is “rescuing Nigeria” from its current challenges, adding that the PDP would adopt whatever political strategy its members and the wider public deem most credible and democratic.
He said:
“I do not know what will happen. But I assure you we will be open to all options, provided they strengthen democracy in Nigeria and are acceptable to our people. What we want is for Nigerians to be rescued from the present situation. So whatever option is available and acceptable will be considered. The decision will be taken when we get there.”
The former Minister of Special Duties dismissed fears that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state but warned that the nation’s democratic system is “under threat.”
He stressed that under his leadership, the PDP would build broad partnerships across the political and civic landscape.
“We will work with other political parties under IPAC, with civil society organisations, with the international community, and with the fourth estate of the realm, so we can ensure democracy is safeguarded,” he added.
Turaki’s comments come amid heightened internal rifts and parallel leadership structures within the PDP, as various factions jostle for control ahead of the next election cycle.
