Israeli troops killed a Lebanese municipal employee early Thursday during a raid on the border village of Blida in southern Lebanon, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported, marking a serious escalation despite a November 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah.

According to the NNA, the Israeli force, supported by several vehicles, crossed more than one kilometre into Lebanese territory, stormed the Blida municipality building where employee Ibrahim Salameh was sleeping, and “proceeded to kill him.” The agency said the troops withdrew at dawn after several hours.

In a separate incident, Israeli forces reportedly blew up a hall used for religious ceremonies in the nearby village of Adaisseh.

Ceasefire Tensions Rise

Israel has maintained troops in five southern Lebanese areas since the ceasefire and continues to carry out regular air strikes against what it calls Hezbollah positions.

According to the UN human rights office, at least 111 civilians have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli forces since the truce took effect.

U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus, speaking at a meeting of ceasefire monitors in Naqoura on Wednesday, urged Beirut to bring all weapons under state control by the end of the year, saying the Lebanese army must now fully implement its plan to disarm non-state groups.
