The convicted billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans, was on Monday re-arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, over the alleged murder of two police officers.

The case, which was transferred from Justice Adenike Coker’s court, involves Evans and his co-defendant, Joseph Ikenna Emeka.

At the resumed proceedings, prosecution counsel A. O. Azeez appeared for the Lagos State Government, while Charity O. represented Chief Emefo Etudo on behalf of Evans, and Nelson Onyejiakor represented Emeka.

Azeez informed the court that the case had been officially reassigned and requested that the defendants be re-arraigned on an amended charge. He clarified that any pending plea bargain applications previously filed before Justice Coker would not affect the process.

The defendants were then re-arraigned on a five-count amended charge bordering on murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and attempted murder.

Prosecution Details

According to the prosecution, the offences were committed on or about August 27, 2013, at around 10:00 p.m. along Third Avenue, Festac Town, Lagos.

Evans and Emeka were accused of killing two police officers, identified as Peter Nweke and Chijioke Ngozi, at the same location and time.

The offences, the prosecution said, contravene Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Background

Evans, who gained national notoriety for his involvement in high-profile kidnappings, is already serving prison sentences following his conviction in two separate criminal trials. He is, however, still facing three ongoing cases, including the current one.

Justice Ogala adjourned the matter to November 19, 2025, for hearing and the issuance of witness summons.
