Contrary to online claims that he drowned while attempting a backflip, investigations have revealed that Damilola Balogun, a 400-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was swept away by strong ocean currents at a beach in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

Balogun, who was set to begin his teaching practice on Monday, was also the president-elect of the Nigerian Universities Education Students Association (NUESA), UNILAG chapter.

Final moments

According to findings by PUNCH Metro, Balogun had gone to the beach in the Idado community for a handover get-together with outgoing association executives.

A source present at the outing said the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon after Balogun, accompanied by the General Secretary and outgoing vice president, moved towards the shoreline to take pictures and videos.

“The General Secretary warned him that the ocean current was too strong, but Balogun insisted he wanted to ‘enjoy the village life’ a little longer,” the source said.

The source added that Balogun ignored further warnings and was later seen waving for help as the waves pulled him in. Attempts by local divers to rescue him failed. His body was recovered on Saturday morning in the Museyo community, opposite the spot where he drowned, and buried later that day.

Students mourn

In a statement signed by its chairman, Abdul-Raheem Abdul-Quadri, and spokesperson, Ridwan Ajayi, the Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS JCC) described Balogun as “a beacon of hope, an embodiment of courage, and a steadfast advocate for the rights and welfare of students.”

“He embodied resilience, dedication, and a genuine passion for service. He was a happy soul, a star with dreams as bright as dawn, and a leader committed to advancing the welfare and aspirations of Nigerian students,” the statement read.

UNILAG response pending

When contacted on Monday, UNILAG spokesperson Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem requested a text message instead of speaking by phone. As of press time, she had yet to respond.

Similar past tragedies

This is not the first time Lagos beaches have witnessed such an incident. In 2022, four teenagers drowned at Elegushi Beach, Lekki, while celebrating the completion of their West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
