The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has declared that the Labour Party (LP) will adopt an open and transparent process in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, assuring aspirants of a fair and competitive contest.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday after observing the inaugural meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), Otti emphasized that the party would not impose candidates, but instead allow all qualified members to participate freely in the race. According to him, the LP is committed to upholding democratic principles by ensuring equal opportunities for aspirants who meet the stipulated requirements.

He outlined key eligibility criteria for those seeking the party’s presidential ticket, including active membership of the party and the financial capacity to support their campaigns. He stressed that no aspirant who satisfies these conditions would be denied the opportunity to contest.

“Once you meet the requirements of the party and you are interested in running, the ticket is available. Democracy does not exclude anyone who is qualified. Ultimately, it is the people who will decide who leads them,” Otti stated.

The governor reaffirmed that the Labour Party’s presidential ticket remains open ahead of 2027, signaling a departure from practices where candidates are handpicked by party elites. He added that the new leadership of the party has both the credibility and capacity to reposition the LP as a formidable force in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Otti also used the occasion to congratulate the newly elected National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, along with members of the 13-member National Working Committee. He expressed confidence in their ability to steer the party effectively over the next four years, noting that their emergence reflects a renewed sense of purpose within the party.

“I congratulate the National Chairman and the entire National Working Committee for being entrusted with this responsibility. We have absolute confidence in their leadership and their ability to move the party forward,” he said.

Highlighting the significance of the NWC’s inaugural meeting, Otti pointed to the high turnout of party stakeholders as evidence of growing unity within the Labour Party. He revealed that more than 25 state chairmen, including some aligned with previous leadership structures, were present at the meeting—an indication that the party is gradually resolving internal disputes.

Addressing concerns about factional divisions that have previously plagued the party, the governor maintained that recent developments, particularly the outcome of the national convention, demonstrate broad participation and a collective commitment to rebuilding the party.

He further disclosed that the LP leadership is prioritizing reforms aimed at strengthening internal processes, especially in areas such as primary elections and voting procedures. These measures, he said, are critical to ensuring credibility, transparency, and fairness in future electoral contests.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to take shape, Otti reiterated that the Labour Party remains focused on consolidating its structures, fostering inclusivity, and presenting a viable alternative to Nigerians.

“The signs are clear that we are overcoming our challenges. The unity we are seeing now shows that the party is on the path of consolidation and growth,” he added.

With its renewed commitment to internal democracy and institutional reforms, the Labour Party appears poised to play a significant role in Nigeria’s next electoral cycle, as it opens its doors to aspirants seeking to contest for the nation’s highest office.
