A Nigerian doctoral student, Chidubem Nuela Enebechi, has emerged winner of the prestigious Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition hosted by Purdue University, outperforming other top finalists in a highly competitive global contest.

Nuela, as she is popularly known, is an international student from Nigeria currently pursuing a PhD in Industrial Engineering at the institution. Her victory follows an impressive performance where she presented her research on inclusive and human-centered design, a field focused on creating solutions that are accessible and beneficial to diverse populations.

The competition, held on April 22, featured 10 finalists who were required to present their research work within a strict three-minute timeframe to a live audience and panel of judges. Participants were also judged on clarity, engagement, and the real-world impact of their work.

Before advancing to her doctoral studies, Nuela earned her undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Minnesota State University Moorhead on May 11, 2018. Over the years, she has developed a strong passion for mentoring and inspiring young people, particularly encouraging greater participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Beyond academics, Nuela is known for her vibrant personality and diverse interests. She actively engages in outdoor activities such as running marathons, hiking, biking, and rollerblading. She also enjoys traveling and dancing, reflecting a balance between rigorous academic pursuit and personal fulfillment.

Her philosophy challenges stereotypes, as she proudly embraces her identity—advocating that one can be a woman, Black, wear natural hair, enjoy beauty and fashion, and still excel in a demanding field like engineering.

Nuela’s victory has sparked excitement among Nigerians and the global academic community, with many hailing her as a role model for young women aspiring to break barriers in STEM and research.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is a globally recognized academic event that tests the ability of graduate students to communicate complex research in a simple, engaging, and impactful manner.

Her achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also reinforces Nigeria’s growing footprint in global innovation, research, and academic excellence.
