Security presence has been significantly intensified across Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the circulation of a purported classified memo linked to the Department of State Services (DSS), warning of possible coordinated terrorist attacks in Abuja.

The document, which surfaced online, allegedly identified key strategic locations as potential targets, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and the Kuje Custodial Centre, along with other sensitive installations within and around the capital.

In response, security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed that security measures have been reinforced at airports, custodial centres, and other critical locations.

The alert is believed to have stemmed from an internal communication by the Nigeria Customs Service, which warned of alleged plans by extremist groups, including Islamic State West Africa Province, Boko Haram, Ansaru, and JNIM, to carry out attacks on key facilities. The memo further suggested that some fighters may have already infiltrated parts of the FCT with the aim of freeing detained insurgents.

Although authorities have not officially verified the authenticity of the document, security deployments have increased across Abuja. Joint patrols involving police and military personnel have been expanded, alongside intensified stop-and-search operations at major entry points, transport hubs, and public areas.

Residents across major districts have reported a noticeable rise in armed security presence, particularly at critical intersections and infrastructure corridors. Officials describe the heightened measures as precautionary steps to deter potential threats.

The development has rekindled memories of the July 5, 2022 attack on the Kuje custodial facility, one of Nigeria’s most significant recent security breaches, during which heavily armed attackers stormed the prison, breached its perimeter, and enabled a mass escape of inmates.

Reacting to the situation, retired military officers have called for vigilance and coordinated action. A former senior officer, General Gambo Mai Adua (retd.), urged security agencies to remain proactive and enhance intelligence gathering, particularly through community engagement. He also stressed the importance of operational readiness among elite units tasked with protecting the capital.

Similarly, Major General Bashir Galma (retd.) cautioned against the uncoordinated release of sensitive intelligence, warning that such disclosures could trigger public panic or compromise security operations. He emphasized the need for structured communication to maintain public confidence and prevent misinformation.

Meanwhile, reactions among residents remain mixed. While some expressed confidence in the capacity of security agencies to prevent any attack, others voiced concern and urged authorities not to underestimate the threat.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have yet to issue an official statement confirming the leaked memo. However, surveillance and patrol operations continue to intensify across Abuja.
