Ikoyi Community Threatens to Bar Political Campaigns Over Alleged Marginalisation

Residents of Ikoyi town in Isokan Local Government Area of Osun State have warned political parties against conducting campaign activities in the community, citing years of alleged neglect and underrepresentation.

The community, speaking through its youth leadership, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord Party of failing to address its concerns regarding political inclusion and infrastructural development.

Youth Leader and palace chief, Orolade Abiodun, who addressed journalists over the weekend, said Ikoyi had been consistently sidelined in elective positions since the creation of Osun State. He cautioned that political actors from the affected parties might be denied access to the community if their demands remain unmet.

“We may not welcome them to canvass for votes if our demands are not met,” Abiodun said.

He called on prominent political figures, including former Osun State governor Bisi Akande, ex-governor Gboyega Oyetola, and Governor Ademola Adeleke, to ensure that Ikoyi is given the opportunity to produce candidates in upcoming elections.

Abiodun lamented that the town had never produced a member of the House of Representatives, despite other communities within the same federal constituency occupying the position multiple times. He urged the APC to zone its ticket to Ikoyi in the interest of fairness and equity.

On the state assembly seat, Abiodun reiterated the existence of a long-standing rotational arrangement between Irewole and Isokan local governments, which dates back to 1991. He stressed that it was now Isokan’s turn to produce the next representative.

Expressing concern over reports that the arrangement might be disrupted, he alleged that there were plans to retain incumbents who recently defected to the Accord Party.

“The current lawmaker is from Irewole, and it is now the turn of Isokan. We appeal to Accord stakeholders to return the ticket to Isokan in the interest of equity,” he added.
