Elon Musk’s ‘APC’ Tweet Sparks Political Confusion Among Nigerians

A social media post by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has ignited widespread debate among Nigerian users after many misinterpreted his use of the acronym “APC.”

Musk, the CEO of Tesla, shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday describing his futuristic vehicle, the Cybertruck, as “an APC from the future.” While the statement gained global attention, it triggered a particularly strong reaction in Nigeria, where “APC” is widely recognised as the acronym for the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The misunderstanding led many Nigerians to assume Musk was referencing the political party rather than the military term “Armoured Personnel Carrier,” which is often used to describe the Cybertruck’s rugged, armored design.

Several users took to the comment section seeking clarification. One user, identified as Daily Pulse, asked, “Which APC are you referring to, sir?” Another commenter, First Principles, urged Musk to avoid the abbreviation, noting that in Nigeria it is associated with “years of hardship, insecurity, and hunger.”

Other reactions ranged from concern to humour. A user, Dhamilarey, warned jokingly that Nigerians might begin boycotting Tesla if the term was not clarified, while another, Prom Prom, expressed shock at the wording.

Some commenters used the moment to inject satire into Nigeria’s political discourse, while others attempted to clarify the intended meaning. A user, Dr Ose Etoobhio, explained that “APC” in this context referred to an armoured military vehicle, not politics.

Popular commentator Daniel Regha also weighed in, noting that Musk’s description likely referred to the Cybertruck’s design and partial functionality, which resembles that of a military armoured vehicle.

The incident highlights how global conversations on social media can take on local political meanings, especially when widely recognised acronyms overlap with sensitive national issues.
