The Ekiti State Police Command has launched a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of efforts to strengthen security and combat violent offences across the state.
The initiative, introduced in line with directives from the Nigeria Police Force leadership, was officially unveiled at the Command Headquarters in Ado Ekiti.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Michael Falade, described the VCRU as a specialised rapid-response team designed to address the growing complexity of criminal activities.
According to him, the unit was established to ensure faster and more effective responses to distress calls, particularly in cases involving violent crimes.
Falade disclosed that operatives assigned to the unit have commenced intensive training focused on tactical operations and intelligence gathering to prepare them for deployment.
He urged officers to uphold professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties, warning that misconduct or abuse of power would not be tolerated.
The police chief also called on residents to support the new unit by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community collaboration remains key to effective policing.
Falade commended Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for his continued support, particularly in enhancing logistics and operational capacity for the Command.
In his remarks, the Secretary of the Police Community Relations Committee in Ekiti State, Lawrence Ogunsetire, pledged the committee’s support, assuring that communities would be mobilised to collaborate with the VCRU.
Similarly, the National Provost Marshal, Joshua Makinde, expressed confidence in the new unit, noting that it would complement existing security structures and further enhance the Command’s response to crime.
The establishment of the VCRU is expected to reinforce ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property across Ekiti State.
