The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reacted strongly to the recent legal developments surrounding its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, confirming that he has filed an appeal against his terrorism conviction at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In a press statement signed by the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the judgment as unfair and politically influenced. The organisation said the appeal, filed on February 4, 2026, challenges both the conviction and the life sentences imposed on Kanu.

According to the statement, the group expressed concerns about the legal process and alleged that certain decisions during the trial limited access to effective legal representation. IPOB further argued that the handling of the case raises broader questions about justice and due process within Nigeria’s judicial system.

The group also used the opportunity to comment on the country’s growing security challenges, claiming that continued instability reflects deeper governance issues. It urged the Federal Government to reconsider its approach to national security and political dissent, while reiterating its call for Kanu’s release.

IPOB maintained that restoring justice would help reduce tensions and promote peace across the country. However, it is important to note that Nigerian authorities have not publicly responded to the latest claims made in the statement as of the time of this report.

The Federal Government has previously designated IPOB as a proscribed organisation, and security agencies continue to caution against activities linked to the group.
