[BREAKING]: IPOB Raises Alarm Over Sharia, Says Nigeria’s Unity ‘Impossible’

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has weighed in on the renewed debate surrounding Sharia law in Nigeria, describing the controversy as evidence of deep structural and religious divisions within the country.

In a press statement dated February 27, 2026, and signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group referenced reports, including one allegedly submitted by United States Congressman Riley Moore to former U.S. President Donald Trump, concerning discussions about the status of Sharia penal codes in Nigeria.

IPOB stated that it recognizes the constitutional right of Muslims to practice their religion, including the application of Sharia law within their communities. However, the group expressed concern over what it described as the extension or imposition of such laws on non-Muslims.

According to the statement, the debate over Sharia highlights what IPOB called contradictions in Nigeria’s secular framework, arguing that multiple legal systems operating within the same federation have fueled tension and mistrust among religious groups.

The group further alleged that non-Muslim communities in parts of Northern Nigeria face security and religious challenges, claiming that the Nigerian state has not done enough to guarantee equal protection for all citizens.

Reiterating its long-standing position, IPOB maintained that the creation of an independent Biafran state remains, in its view, the most viable solution to ensuring religious freedom, security, and human rights for its people.

IPOB, led by detained separatist figure Nnamdi Kanu, also called on international stakeholders, including the U.S. Congress and other global institutions, to pay closer attention to religious freedom concerns in Nigeria.

As of press time, the Federal Government had not issued an official response to the latest claims by the separatist group.
