The family of Senator Okey Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly, has officially announced his passing.
In a statement titled “Notification of the Death of Senator Okey Ezea,” his son, Jideofor Ezea, said the lawmaker died on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at approximately 11:07 p.m. in a private hospital in Lagos after a brief illness.
“With profound grief, the family of Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea … announces his passing,” the statement read. Senator Ezea is survived by his wife, Chioma, and four children.
Legislative Contributions and Leadership Roles
The announcement highlighted Senator Ezea’s influence and active participation in the 10th Senate.
He initially chaired the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, before later serving as:
-
Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development
-
Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa and NEPAD
-
Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Culture and Creative Economy
He sponsored several notable bills and motions, including legislation to establish the Federal College of Agriculture, Adani, and a motion urging the creation of a military base in Uzo-Uwani LGA to address persistent attacks by armed herdsmen.
A Long and Influential Political Career
Beyond the National Assembly, Ezea had a distinguished political journey.
He was a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and played a central role in building the party’s structure in Enugu State in 2013.
He contested the Enugu governorship election three times—in 2007 and 2011 under the Labour Party, and in 2015 under the APC.
His election to the Senate in 2023, again on the Labour Party platform, where he defeated an incumbent governor, was widely regarded as a major political upset in the state.
He also served as Chairman of the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, Taraba State.
Principles and Party Loyalty
The family noted that Senator Ezea remained firmly committed to the Labour Party throughout his political career, even as other lawmakers from Enugu State defected to the ruling party.
“He remained steadfast in his principles,” the statement said, emphasizing his refusal to abandon the platform that brought him into the Senate.
The family requested prayers and support as they mourn what they described as an “immense loss.”
