Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has confirmed that star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off at half-time due to injury during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying playoff defeat to DR Congo in Rabat on Sunday.

Osimhen, Nigeria’s leading attacking figure, failed to return for the second half of the high-pressure encounter, prompting widespread concern among fans and analysts. Chelle replaced him with Akor Adams, a move that immediately sparked debate given the intensity of the match.

Nigeria played out a 1–1 draw after 120 minutes—Frank Onyeka opening the scoring before Mechak Elia equalised for DR Congo—before eventually losing 4–3 on penalties, according to Naija News.

After the match, a reporter queried Chelle on the rationale behind withdrawing his most influential forward. The coach offered a brief but decisive explanation: “He has an injury.” He provided no further details.

Osimhen’s absence also had a noticeable impact on the Congolese team’s strategy. DR Congo defender Noah Sadiki admitted the striker’s injury shifted the momentum of the game in their favour.

“It helps. We know Osimhen is a big player… if he was out, it would be a bit easier,” Sadiki said, adding that the team had practised penalties in preparation.

Despite efforts to regain control, the Super Eagles struggled in extra time, allowing DR Congo to hold firm and secure a place in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.
