APC Chieftain Reveals Those Orchestrating Sylva’s Political Persecution

An influential member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Ayebabomote Birakumo, has alleged that political rivals of former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva are behind his ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC had recently declared Sylva wanted over an alleged case of conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14.8 million, a development that coincided with media reports linking the former governor to an alleged plot to destabilise President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Sylva has consistently denied any involvement in the supposed coup attempt.

In a statement issued on Monday, Birakumo defended the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, describing the EFCC probe as “politically motivated” and driven by opponents who fear Sylva’s political relevance.

According to him, “We are raising awareness to alert Bayelsans and the entire APC family that Chief Timipre Sylva remains a committed and visionary leader of the APC.

“We are undeterred by the politically motivated persecution of Chief Sylva, knowing full well it is orchestrated by his detractors and political adversaries who fear his monumental influence not only in the state but across the region and nation.

“Chief Sylva is a true democrat and statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development.”

Birakumo urged party members to remain steadfast and described the allegations against Sylva as part of a broader strategy to weaken his political standing ahead of the 2027 elections.

As of publication time, the EFCC has not publicly responded to Birakumo’s claims.
