The Lagos State Police Command has assured residents of their safety following reports of planned disruptions on the Third Mainland Bridge by protesting youths from the Oworonshoki area of the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said adequate security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order across Lagos.
“The command is aware of information circulating regarding a planned disruption on the Third Mainland Bridge by some youths in the Oworonshoki area,” Adebisi said.
“We wish to assure the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to maintain law and order. Our officers are fully deployed to ensure the safety of all road users and prevent any obstruction or breach of the peace.”
Adebisi urged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear, adding that the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring the free flow of traffic across the state.
Meanwhile,Emmynet24 news media gathered that the latest wave of demolitions in Oworonshoki struck the Coker and Ojulari communities around midnight on Saturday—hours after the Lagos State Government announced that about 80 affected property owners had received compensation.
Eyewitnesses said bulldozers, escorted by armed security personnel, entered the communities under the cover of darkness to demolish remaining structures spared during earlier phases of the exercise.
Recall that a previous demolition by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had sparked protests, with residents blocking parts of the Third Mainland Bridge outward Lagos. The demonstrators carried placards with inscriptions such as “Stop demolishing our houses,” “Give us back our lands,” and “This is not democracy.”
It took the intervention of police operatives to restore calm and reopen the route to traffic. Some protesters also alleged that tear gas was fired to disperse the crowd.
