NiMet Forecasts Sunshine, Cloudiness, and Isolated Thunderstorms Nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a mix of sunshine, cloudiness, and isolated thunderstorms across various parts of the country between Monday and Wednesday.

In its three-day weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency said that most regions will experience alternating periods of sunshine and rainfall, with thunderstorms expected in several states.

According to NiMet, Monday’s forecast indicates sunny skies with patches of clouds over the northern region during the morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms and light rains anticipated over parts of Taraba and southern Kebbi.
Later in the day, moderate rains and thunderstorms are expected in Taraba, Adamawa, Kaduna, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kebbi, and southern Sokoto States.

For the central region, the agency predicted cloudy skies with spells of sunshine and morning thunderstorms over Niger, Benue, Plateau, and Kogi States, followed by isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, Kwara, and Nasarawa States.

NiMet said the southern region will experience a cloudy atmosphere with morning rains and thunderstorms over Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Ebonyi, and Abia States, with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms expected later in the day across most parts of the region.


Tuesday’s Outlook: Clear Skies in the North, Rains in the South

On Tuesday, NiMet forecast sunny skies with patches of clouds over the northern region during the morning hours, followed by isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains in Kaduna, Taraba, Bauchi, southern Kano, southern Jigawa, and Adamawa States later in the day.

The central states are expected to experience morning thunderstorms with light rains in Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Niger, and Benue States, and moderate thunderstorms later in the day across Nasarawa, FCT, Niger, and Kogi.

In the southern region, morning rains are likely over Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, while isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are predicted for Imo, Abia, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom later in the day.


Wednesday’s Forecast: More Sunshine, Isolated Rains

For Wednesday, the agency predicted sunny skies with patches of clouds over the northern region, alongside light morning rains in Taraba State and isolated thunderstorms later in the day over Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

A cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected in the central region, with light morning rains over Niger, Kwara, and Benue States, and moderate thunderstorms later in Kogi, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, and the FCT.

In the southern region, thunderstorms with light rains are expected during the morning hours in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa, while moderate rains and thunderstorms are anticipated later across most southern states.


NiMet Issues Safety Advisory

The agency urged the public to exercise caution during rainfall periods, especially motorists and pedestrians.

“People should drive carefully under the rain, fasten loose objects to prevent accidents, and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms,” NiMet advised.

It also warned against seeking shelter under trees to avoid injury from falling branches, and cautioned farmers against applying fertilisers or pesticides just before rainfall to prevent nutrient leaching.

NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency for effective flight planning and safety.
