The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly criticised the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Raheem Adaramaja, over what it described as the “humiliation and public disgrace” of teachers during an inspection visit to Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Amule, on Monday.
In a statement issued late Tuesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Olusola Adewara, the opposition party expressed outrage over reports that Prof. Adaramaja allegedly instructed teachers — including the Vice Principal — to sweep the school compound in the presence of students.
According to eyewitness accounts cited by the PDP, the SUBEB chairman, said to be acting on the directive of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, had accused the teachers of maintaining an unkempt environment and allegedly ordered them to pick up litter, despite their explanation that the students had just returned from break.
PDP: “An Abuse of Office and Public Degradation”
The PDP described the alleged incident as “a severe abuse of office and public degradation” of teachers who, it said, continue to work under challenging conditions.
“We ask Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq if this is the new standard for the teaching profession in Kwara — to have a professor, who was once a teacher, compel educators to perform the duties of labourers before their students,” the statement partly read.
The opposition party further accused Prof. Adaramaja of “arrogance, insensitivity, and moral bankruptcy,” alleging that the act reflected a growing culture of oppression under the AbdulRazaq administration.
“Those who rode to power under the Otoge mantra promising liberation from oppression have turned into power-drunk officials humiliating the very workers they have failed to support,” the statement added.
The PDP also alleged that, despite six years in office, the AbdulRazaq government has failed to significantly improve teachers’ welfare, noting that “many schools remain in poor condition, with some students still learning under trees.”
Call for Accountability and Apology
The party called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to defend its members and resist any attempt to erode the dignity of the teaching profession. It demanded that Prof. Adaramaja issue a public apology to the affected teachers and to the entire teaching community in Kwara State.
The PDP also urged Governor AbdulRazaq to condemn the alleged action and take disciplinary measures against the SUBEB boss if he was not directly involved.
“The dignity of our educators must be protected. No government official should subject teachers to ridicule in the name of supervision,” the statement said.
Adaramaja Denies Allegations, Says Action Misrepresented
However, in response to the allegations, Prof. Raheem Adaramaja dismissed the claims as “falsehood and political propaganda,” insisting that his actions were misinterpreted.
Speaking to Emmynet24 news media on Wednesday in Ilorin, the SUBEB chairman said:
“Cleanliness and orderliness are key components of a conducive learning environment. What happened at GDSS Amule was a simple reminder that teachers must lead by example in instilling discipline among students — not an act of humiliation.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to discipline, accountability, and excellence in Kwara’s education system, stressing that his decisions are driven by responsibility and service, not pride or abuse of authority.
