The Kano State Government has directed the State Hisba Board to begin preparations for the wedding of no fewer than 2,000 couples under its mass wedding programme, aimed at promoting family stability and reducing social vices in the state.
The directive was confirmed by the Hisba Board’s Deputy Commander-General, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, during a telephone interview with PUNCH Online on Thursday.
“We are planning to conduct a mass wedding of another batch of 2,000 couples as directed by the state government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” Aminudeen said.
While the official date for the ceremony has yet to be announced, preparations are underway to ensure the event’s smooth execution.
Medical Screening and Registration Compulsory
According to Sheikh Aminudeen, all prospective couples must undergo mandatory medical screening before participating in the state-sponsored wedding.
He explained that the health checks — covering HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, genotype, and drug testing — are compulsory for all participants to ensure their fitness for marriage.
“All prospective couples interested in the wedding must register before participating.
The medical screening is also part of the prerequisite arrangement of the mass wedding proceedings, and it’s compulsory because anybody who fails to present himself or herself for the screening will be automatically disqualified,” he emphasized.
Background: Reviving a Social Welfare Initiative
The mass wedding scheme, reintroduced by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is part of the administration’s social welfare agenda designed to support vulnerable groups, particularly widows, divorcees, and spinsters from low-income families.
The initiative aims to reduce the financial burden of marriage, promote moral values, and curb social problems such as prostitution and youth idleness in the state.
Under previous administrations, the Hisba Board facilitated similar mass weddings by providing essentials such as dowries, furniture, and wedding attire for both grooms and brides.
Broader Social Impact
Observers note that the programme has become one of Kano’s signature social interventions, combining religious, social, and economic objectives.
It also strengthens the Hisba Board’s mandate in moral guidance and family welfare, aligning with Governor Yusuf’s broader vision for community development and inclusive governance.
