The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has confirmed that the recent transfer of cleric Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara to another custodial facility under federal jurisdiction was conducted in line with established administrative and operational procedures.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofar Nassarawa, the NCoS said the transfer adhered strictly to the provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, which empowers the Service to manage and relocate inmates across various custodial centres nationwide.

“The movement of inmates between facilities, depending on their security classification, is a normal administrative process guided by law,” Lawan-Kofar Nassarawa said.

He explained that such transfers are influenced by key considerations, including security requirements, inmate classification, facility capacity, and rehabilitation needs, noting that the cleric’s welfare and legal rights remain protected under the law.

“The transfer does not in any way affect the inmate’s legal status, right of appeal, or access to legal representation,” he added.

The Controller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to the safe custody, reformation, and rehabilitation of inmates, as well as their reintegration into society.

Background

An Upper Shari’a Court in Kano, presided over by Malam Ibrahim Sarki-Yola, sentenced Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara to death by hanging on December 15, 2022, after finding him guilty of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The cleric was prosecuted by the Kano State Government on a four-count charge relating to blasphemous statements made during sermons on August 10, October 25, and December 20, 2019.
