The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to publicly clarify the legal framework under which its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is currently being tried.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB urged the NBA to “tell the world under what extant and subsisting law” Kanu is facing trial, alleging that the law previously used against him has been repealed.

Powerful argued that the courts have so far failed to address this issue, accusing some legal commentators of making misleading public statements without proper understanding of the case.

> “Let the NBA, as the supposed guardian of legal conscience in Nigeria, tell the world under what law Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being tried today,” the statement read.

“Because the last time we checked, the law under which he was allegedly charged has been repealed. And the court itself seems too shy—or too complicit—to admit that elementary fact,” he added.

The group criticised what it described as “poorly informed commentary” from individuals appearing on media platforms to discuss Kanu’s ongoing legal proceedings, insisting that the focus should instead be on the validity of the charges.

IPOB maintained that it is not seeking any special treatment for Kanu but demanding “clarity and adherence to the rule of law.”

> “We are not asking for magic. We are asking for truth—the same truth the NBA once claimed to defend. The world is watching, and history is taking notes,” the statement concluded.

As of press time, the NBA had not responded to the statement or commented on the claims.
