Imo State has taken the lead in Nigeria’s ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, according to the latest data released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The state recorded 826,850 online pre-registrations, representing 10.32% of the national total — the highest figure across the country. This was revealed in INEC’s Week 9 update on the CVR exercise released in Abuja.

Lagos followed closely with 604,619 registrations (7.56%), while Ogun State ranked third with 510,062 (6.37%). Overall, 8,003,196 Nigerians have so far completed the online pre-registration stage of the exercise, which began in August 2025.

At the other end of the spectrum, Yobe State recorded the lowest participation with only 2,714 registrations (0.03%), while the process remains suspended in Anambra State pending the conclusion of its November 8 governorship election, in line with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022.

Youth and Women Drive Voter Registration Surge

INEC’s demographic breakdown shows that women slightly outnumber men, with 4,190,890 female registrants (52.37%) compared to 3,812,306 males (47.63%).

Young Nigerians aged 18–34 years continue to dominate the registration data, accounting for 5,533,514 entries (69.14%). They are followed by those aged 35–49 years (20.97%), while citizens aged 50–69 years make up 8.81% of total registrants.

By occupation, students represent the largest category with 2,018,967 registrations (25.23%), followed by business professionals (20.74%). Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) constitute 2.29% of total registrants, numbering 182,718 individuals.

Over 1.7 Million Complete Full Registration

INEC further reported that 1,710,450 Nigerians have successfully completed the full registration process, which includes both online pre-registration and biometric capture at designated centers.

Of this number, 956,566 completed registration online, while 753,884 finalized the process in person at INEC offices nationwide.

Youth remain the dominant demographic, with 1,261,288 registrants aged 18–34 (73.74%) completing their registration. Female participation also remained higher, with 945,305 women (55.27%) compared to 765,145 men (44.73%).

PWDs accounted for 24,207 registrants (1.41%), while students led the occupational breakdown with 566,391 completed registrations (33.11%), followed by businesspersons (18.49%) and housewives (15.28%).

Osun, FCT, and Lagos Top Completed Registrations

In terms of completed registrations, Osun State topped the chart with 151,593, followed by the Federal Capital Territory (106,855) and Lagos State (85,831). Other leading states include Kano (96,280), Imo (90,469), and Rivers (28,507).

INEC noted that all figures are subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), designed to eliminate duplicate or invalid entries.

INEC Urges Eligible Nigerians to Register

The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral process. It urged unregistered Nigerians to visit its official portals — cvr.inec.gov.ng or cvr.inecnigeria.org — or proceed to the nearest registration center.

INEC also reminded citizens that online registration must be completed physically at one of its 811 state and local government offices nationwide.

Context

INEC had earlier disclosed that more than 2.6 million Nigerians registered online and in-person within the first two weeks of the ongoing CVR exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025.

With over 8 million pre-registrations now recorded, the Commission says it remains focused on expanding voter access, particularly among young people, women, and marginalized groups.
