Governor Bago Reaffirms Commitment to Green, Sustainable Development

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has restated his administration’s commitment to promoting green initiatives and eco-friendly development as part of his “New Niger Agenda.”

The governor made this known during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim.


Bago, Minister Discuss Environmental Collaboration

During the meeting, Governor Bago and the minister discussed avenues for collaboration to tackle environmental challenges, strengthen biosafety frameworks, and promote sustainable climate action across the country.

According to the statement, Bago, fondly referred to as the Farmer Governor, emphasised that his administration’s focus on environmental sustainability remains central to its long-term development plans.

“We are committed to partnering with the Ministry of Environment in addressing environmental challenges and ensuring a greener Nigeria,” the governor said.


Federal Government Pledges Support

In his response, Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, commended Governor Bago for his proactive environmental policies and assured him of the Federal Government’s support in strengthening ongoing and new environmental programmes in Niger State.

“The Ministry will continue to support Niger State’s efforts to achieve a cleaner, safer, and greener environment,” the minister said.


Focus on Climate and Biosafety Programmes

The statement also disclosed that discussions covered joint efforts to promote biosafety management, enhance climate resilience, and expand environmental protection initiatives at the state and national levels.

Both leaders reaffirmed their shared vision of building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Nigeria for future generations.

Governor Bago was accompanied on the visit by Bello Bawa Bwari, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA).


Background

Since assuming office, Governor Bago has launched several environmental sustainability initiatives under the New Niger Agenda, including large-scale tree planting, urban renewal projects, and green agriculture promotion.
His administration has consistently positioned Niger State as a model for eco-friendly governance in northern Nigeria.
