The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the rising wave of attacks and killings targeting security operatives across Nigeria.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor described the spate of violence against soldiers, police officers, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and vigilante groups as “tragic and unacceptable.”
Obi emphasized that the sacrifices made by security operatives must not go unappreciated, stressing that the country must rise above offering condolences alone.
“The country has been thrown into mourning yet again with the reported tragic killings of our security personnel. Our men and women in uniform have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, dedicating their lives to the safety and stability of our dear nation,” he wrote.
The Labour Party chieftain argued that Nigeria cannot continue to bury its security personnel while leaving their families abandoned. He called for a sustainable compensation framework to ensure the welfare of dependents of fallen officers.
“Our government must rise to the responsibility of ensuring that the wives, children, and parents of these fallen heroes are fairly compensated and supported. That is the least a grateful nation can provide. It is not charity, it is justice,” Obi stressed.
Calls for Urgent Action
Obi urged leaders at all levels to take decisive steps to equip and motivate security operatives adequately, noting that security remains the foundation of effective governance.
He also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the slain operatives and expressed solidarity with their families.
“To every fallen hero, may your soul rest in perfect peace. Your sacrifice and patriotism will never be forgotten. And to the families left behind, you are not alone. May God continue to provide you with strength and comfort,” he added.
