The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) issued a strongly worded statement today warning the Nigerian government, security agencies and what it described as “international collaborators” over what IPOB called a deterioration in the health of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who the group says is being held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a statement signed by Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, the group accused the Nigerian government of unlawfully detaining Kanu after an alleged abduction from Kenya and said continued detention and any decline in his medical condition would have grave consequences for national and regional stability. IPOB described Kanu as “priceless” and said it would not tolerate what it called “blackmail, judicial rascality, or DSS-induced health crisis.”
Key points from IPOB’s statement:
IPOB claims Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health is worsening while in DSS custody and calls for his immediate and unconditional release.
The statement accuses some Igbo politicians and the British government of complicity in Kanu’s detention and criticized those it called “traitors and political jobbers.”
IPOB warns that harm to Kanu could trigger a crisis that would affect Nigeria and the wider region, invoking a historical comparison to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914.
The group urged international organisations, human rights bodies and “peace-loving people” to pressure the Nigerian government to ensure Kanu’s safety and release.
The statement frames the situation as a final warning to President Tinubu’s administration, the DSS, and unnamed foreign partners, saying the organisation “will not be held responsible” if provocations continue.
