The Federal Government has announced that it has secured N250 billion in funding for the development of light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano states.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday during a World Press Conference in Abuja.

According to him, the move reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to balanced and inclusive development across the country, contrary to perceptions in some quarters that certain regions are being neglected.

“The Federal Government is actively supporting various subnational infrastructure projects, for instance the light rail projects in Kano and Kaduna States, for which funding to the tune of N150 billion and N100 billion respectively has been secured,” Idris stated.

He added that Tinubu’s administration is determined to drive massive development at the state and local government levels.

“Local Government Areas are also being fiscally reintegrated as catalysts for growth and development, with the financial autonomy that the President is determined to fully make operational,” he said.

The Minister further explained that all state governments now receive significantly higher allocations from the Federation Account, boosted by the fiscal space created after the removal of fuel subsidies.

“Thanks to the increased headroom from the oil subsidy removal, the sub-national governments are now able to do a lot more and with less debt,” he added.

The rail projects, once completed, are expected to ease transportation, strengthen local economies, and boost regional integration in Northern Nigeria.
