Turkey’s Transport Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, has been fined for exceeding the speed limit after sharing a video of himself driving at up to 225 km/h on a highway near the capital, Ankara.
On Sunday evening, the minister posted the footage on X (formerly Twitter) with the hashtag #TurkeyAccelerates, showing him behind the wheel while listening to folk music and clips of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speeches.
The video inadvertently revealed the speedometer, displaying speeds ranging between 190 km/h and 225 km/h (118–140 mph). The legal speed limit on Turkish highways is 140 km/h (85 mph).
Hours later, Uraloglu reposted the video, admitting he had incriminated himself.
“I took to the wheel to check the Ankara-Nigde highway and unintentionally exceeded the speed limit for a short period. With the video, I effectively denounced myself,” he wrote.
The minister shared a copy of the penalty notice, which confirmed he had been driving at 225 km/h and was fined ₺9,267 ($225).
He pledged greater caution in the future, adding:
“I will be much more careful from now on. Sticking to the speed limit is mandatory for everyone.”
The incident has drawn widespread attention online, sparking debates about accountability and road safety in Turkey.
