Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued incarceration as unjust.

Mbah made the call on Monday during a question-and-answer session at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Enugu, shortly after delivering a paper on the theme “Leadership and Transformation.”

Responding to a participant’s appeal that he sustain pressure on the Federal Government for Kanu’s release, the governor disclosed that his very first meeting with President Bola Tinubu after assuming office centered on the IPOB leader’s detention.

“My first visit to the President was about Nnamdi Kanu. I believe that the right thing to do is to release him. Hopefully, that will be done soon,” Mbah said.

The governor also noted that the weekly sit-at-home order, previously enforced in the Southeast to protest Kanu’s detention, has ended in Enugu State. He credited his administration’s interventions with restoring normal economic and social activities.

“We met a situation where people were compelled to stay at home every Monday. Now, people trade in Ogbete and other markets in peace on Mondays. Monday sit-at-home has ended in Enugu, as you (lawyers) can see. You can also move around and investigate,” he added.

Beyond security and social stability, Mbah outlined strategies his administration is deploying to tackle developmental challenges and unlock new opportunities across the state.

Kanu is currently standing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges, which he has consistently denied.
